Every year, Summit Brewing Co. celebrates the repeal of prohibition with an new, annual poster design and by throwing a Repeal Day event at their Saint Paul brewery/taproom.
We combined a variety of techniques to produce a poster with early 20th century charm and a contemporary composition. The piece is a distilled timeline of the number of active breweries in the United States at different stages in recorded history.
The vehicles were chunks of hardwood cut into puzzles. The pieces you see were left “type high” while the remainder of the block was either cut down or engraved away.
The type was printed using lead versions of the typeface Craw Modern, except “Prohibition” which is set in Bodoni Ultra.
Summit's 2 versions of their logo were produced using photo-polymer plates.Illustration, Print Design, Typography2014 -

Custom lettering and photography project for one of Northern Brewer's beer kits. Smashing Pumpkin Ale is a seasonal best-selling amber ale that encourages the brewer to add real pumpkin during the brewing process. The lettering was based off of Font Fabric's Nexa Slab and engraved with an x-acto blade. Real pumpkins were harmed in the making of this photograph.Photography, Typography2014 -
Metatranslations is a current exhibit at the American Swedish Institute featuring the poet/author Ed Bok Lee and his unique process for gaining inspiration. Lee's process includes studying written history without comprehension of the language it was penned in. The typography and/or handwriting of the original author acts as a catalyst for Lee's imagination and triggers his creative spark.
See it for yourself at the American Swedish Institute through April 26, 2014. ASIMN.orgExhibition Design, Graphic Design, Typography2014 -
